Detroit, Mich. -- The Youngstown State women's
basketball team (6-15) closes an eight-day, four-game swing and
returns to Horizon League play when it visits Detroit, Thursday,
Feb. 8.
Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Calihan Hall in Detroit,
Mich.
The Penguins are looking for their second straight Horizon
League victory and their first win over Detroit in Calihan Hall
since 1983.
Youngstown State is coming off an 81-57 loss at Oakland on
Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Velissa Vaughn tied a career high with 17 points and
three assists.
Junior Heather Karner returned to double figure scoring for the
first time in five games with 16 points, including four
3-pointers.
Scouting the Titans
Detroit is currently in ninth place in the Horizon League standings
with 1-9 league mark. The Titans are 4-19 overall and are led by
Joyce Massey with 15.3 points per game overall and 14.4 points per
game against Horizon League foes.
The Detroit Series
This will be the 19th meeting between Youngstown State and Detroit
and the second this season. Detroit owns a slim 10-8 advantage in
the all-time series. Youngstown State won the last meeting, 55-39,
at the Beeghly Center earlier this season. The Penguins have not
won at Calihan Hall since 1983.
Mo On the Money
Sophomore Monique Godfrey showcased her offensive prowess against
Loyola on Feb. 3. Not only did Godfrey set a career high with 20
points, she hit the game-winning shot with 10 seconds remaining.
Godfrey connected on 8-of-15 from the field against the
Ramblers.
Droppin' Dimes
Youngstown State points guard Lauren Branson has been quite
generous as of late. Over the last four games, Branson has dished
out 20 assists for an average of five assists per game.
Penguin Benchmarks
For two straight games, the Youngstown State bench made a
significant impact on the game. Sophomore Nikita LaFleur posted
double figures for the second straight game off the bench with 10
points against the Loyola. LaFleur also posted seven rebounds and a
career-best five blocks.
Penguins Hold Foe Under 40
Giving up just 39 points to Detroit on Jan. 13, the Penguins held
an opponent to under 40 points in a game for the first time since
holding Malone to 25 points on Dec. 29, 1990. Detroit's eight
points in the first half was also a new low for points allowed in a
half.
Hill Completes Circuit
After defeating UIC, Youngstown State Head Coach Tisha Hill has
defeated every school in the Horizon League at least once since
becoming head coach prior to the 2003-04 season.
Assist Me Please
Junior Lauren Branson continues her ascent up the YSU all-time
assists chart. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 285
career assists and needs 26 more to move into 10th place on the
career chart.
Pendleton Ties Scoring High
Sophomore Ashley Pendleton turned in one of her top career
performances against the Ramblers on Feb. 3. Pendleton tied a
career high with 10 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Schloemp Streak at 65
With an appearance against Oakland on Tuesday, junior Jessica
Schloemp extended her games played streak to 65 straight.
Schloemp's consecutive games started streak ended at 34 after she
did not start against Indiana State on Dec. 6.

the Beeghly Center.
