The Youngstown State women's basketball looks to rebound
from a tough loss to Wright State and closes out its five-game
December homestand against Horizon League foe Butler.
Tipoff is slated for 2:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center and is part
of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.
The Penguins are coming off a 57-52 loss to league foe Wright
State on Thursday evening.
Junior Heather Karner led the Penguins with 14 points and
sophomores Velissa Vaughn and Monique Godfrey added 11 and 10
points, respectively.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Butler enters today's game with a 4-8 overall record and a 1-0
mark in the Horizon League. Butler knocked off Cleveland State,
66-57, on Thursday evening.
Sophomore Lade Akande posted a double-double with 28 points and
10 rebounds while senior Jackie Closser added 17 points. With six
points against the Vikings, Ellen Hamilton became the 18th player
in Butler history to score 1,000 career points.
The Butler Series
This is the 12th meeting between Youngstown State and Butler. The
Bulldogs own a slim 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. Last
season, Youngstown State snapped a six-game losing streak to the
Bulldogs with a 71-63 victory at the Beeghly Center. Youngstown
State won the first four meetings of the series dating back to
2002.
Penguin Block Party
Youngstown State currently leads the Horizon League in blocked
shots per game with 3.50. Sophomore Ashley Pendleton and Nikita
LaFleur are ranked tied for sixth in the league with 0.90 blocks
per game and freshman Anjalia Lyons is 11th with 0.60 blocks per
game.
Assist Me Please
Senior Lauren Branson continues her climb up the YSU all-time
assists chart. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 243
career assists and needs 68 more to move into 10th place on the
career chart.
Schloemp Streak at 55
With an appearance against Wright State on Thursday evening,
junior Jessica Schloemp extended her games played streak to 55
straight. Schloemp's consecutive games started streak ended
at 34 after she did not start against Indiana State on Dec. 6.
