Recruited by head coach Dwight “Dike” Beede out of nearby Warren Western Reserve High School, Calloway roamed the defensive secondary for three of the Penguins’ four head coaches, earning four letters from 1972 to 1975. He played his freshman season for Beede, his sophomore and junior campaigns for Rey Dempsey, and his senior year for former head mentor Bill Narduzzi. His five interceptions in 1974 is still the fifth best mark for a single season as he helped lead the Penguins to their first ever post-season play-off appearance, dropping a 35-14 nod to the University of Delaware in the first round of the NCAA division II play-offs. He earned four letters for the Penguins, being named to the Kodak All America Small College squad in both 1975 and 1976. He still holds the record for the longest punt in Penguin football history, a 76-yarder against Northern Michigan University on October 6, 1973. The Penguins posted a 21-15-1 mark during his four seasons at Youngstown State. Former head coach Rey Dempsey noted that “Don Calloway was a person who gave 100 percent 100 percent of the time. He was a tremendous hitter on a team of great hitters.” Dempsey said, “Cal was so much fun to coach because he was one to exude his confidence, but wasn’t cocky. He was a very humble man and those are the type of guys a coach likes to coach.” Still living in the area, he is with the Warren Police Department.
