Eric Gustafson joined the Youngstown State Sports Medicine staff in July 2025 as a licensed athletic trainer working primarily with the Penguins’ football program.  

Prior to Youngstown State, Gustafson worked at Chowan University providing care for more 500 student-athletes across 20 sports as the Director of Sports Medicine. 

He also has experience working as an intern for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2008 season. 

Gustafson received his Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training from Minnesota State University - Mankato in 2009. He went on to earn his Master's of Science in Exercise and Sports Medicine from Western Michigan University in 2011.

Gustafson’s professional interests include diagnostic ultrasound, manual therapy, and interprofessional collaboration.  In his free time, Eric enjoys hiking, camping and spending time with his wife Ashley, daughter Brynn, and dog Murphy.
