Brian Welch joined the Youngstown State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in February 2024 as an Athletic Academic Coordinator. He began his current role as Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services in September 2024, and he became the sport supervisor for the women's lacrosse program before the 2025-26 season.
In his role, Welch oversees the academic support for Youngstown State’s soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving and men’s golf programs.
Welch previously held Assistant Athletic Director roles at two institutions. Welch was an Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support and Student Services at Valparaiso University in 2021, and he served as an Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Lake Erie College in 2021-22.
Outside of his work experience in athletic administration, Welch has an extensive background as a lacrosse coach. He served as the head men’s lacrosse coach at Division III Hiram College in Northeast Ohio in 2023, and he is the all-time winningest coach at Marian High School (Ind.), Ancilla College (NJCAA), and Concordia University Chicago (NCAA D-III) in Lacrosse.
Before his coaching tenure at Concordia Chicago, Welch worked at Ancilla College in Donaldson, Ind. from 2015-17 where he served as the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, head men’s lacrosse coach, Associate Dean of Student Success and Retention and the Athletic Academic Intervention Specialist. He oversaw athletic advising, tutoring and academic support services while designing, organizing and implementing the Athletic Intervention program for 18 teams.
Welch is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in communications broadcast journalism. He went on to earn a master’s in higher education/ sport administration from Ohio University in 2004.
