Ryan Collins is in his first season as an assistant swimming coach for the Penguins.
Prior to joining YSU in August of 2021, he spent a year at the University of Indianapolis. He worked primarily with the sprint group and also spent time with the distance/long-stroke and mid-distance groups each week.
The Greyhounds had an impressive campaign in 2020-21. The UIndy women scored 391 points to take third place at the NCAA Division II Championships, while the men totalled 369 points to claim its third consecutive third-place finish at the national meet. For the women, it was their highest finish at the Division II Championships in school history. Overall, the Greyhounds combined for program-record 64 All-America first-team selections and won four event championships at the NCAA meet. The UIndy women won the Division II titles in the 200 free and 400 free relays.
Collins spent a year at Mount Union before moving on to UIndy. During his lone season, he worked with all training/stroke disciplines. The men's and women’s teams had a combined dual meet record of 17-8, both teams placed second in the OAC league meet. The Purple Raiders set five school and a conference record, won seven events at the conference, and had nine runner-up finishes. Two men earned their NCAA B Cut in 1,650 free.
Before joining the college ranks, Collins spent three years as an assistant at Jackson High School in Canton, Ohio. During this time, Polar Bear student-athletes achieved success in and out of the pool. Over his time in Jackson, 20 swimmers were academic All-American’s while the men’s and women’s teams achieved a combined 55-7 dual meet record, broke 21 school records and sent 12 athletes on to compete at the NCAA level. Two men’s 200 freestyle relays also achieved All-America status.
Collins got his first coaching experience working as an assistant with the Green YMCA Barracudas and USA club team.
A native of Green, Ohio, He completed his undergrad at Kent State University, where he studied education for 7-12 mathematics, received a minor in mathematics, and his teaching license. He earned his Masters from Mount Union in Educational Leadership with a focus in Athletic Coaching this past spring.
