Katie Stefl is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Youngstown State swimming and diving program.
Stefl works closely with the entire group of swimmers and monitors splits during all events. She also assists in setting up on-campus recruiting visits. She also helps coordinate YSU's Learn to Swim Clinic's in the fall and spring that allows Penguin swimmers to teach swimming skills to young children.
The 2015 campaign saw the emergence of Viktoria Orosz and Madison Aranda as the Guins' 1-2 swimming punch. At the Horizon League Championships, Orosz was second in the 200-yard freestyle, third in the 500 free and third in the 200 backstroke. Aranda placed second in the 1,000 free, fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle and fifth in the 500 free. Combined the two swimmers set eight school records during the year. Highlighting the effort was a record in the 100 free by Orosz which eclipsed the mark that had stood for nearly 30 years.
At the conference meet, YSU had 13 top-eight finishes and 21 placings in the top 16 in both swimming and diving. Aranda and Orosz combined for six top-five finishes.
In 2013-14, Ashley Dow finished second at the Horizon League Championships in the 100-yard backstroke. The Penguins had five top-eight finishes at the league meet and placed 20 athletes in the top 16 in multiple events. Jana Janson set two school records at the HL Championships and the relay teams posted three school bests as well - 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle).
A NCAA Division III All-American, Stefl has three seasons of collegiate coaching experience, most recently at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. In her two seasons in Springfield she worked with the distance group for both the men's and women's programs and worked with the 400 IM and 200 free groups. The women's program was 14th at the NCAA Division III Championships in 2013 and 2012. The Pride women’s 200 and 800-yard relay teams both earned All-America honors, as well as two individuals in 2013.
She spent one season on the staff at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. While there, she worked with both men’s and women’s teams. The women's 200 freestyle relay qualified for NCAAs during her campaign.
Stefl was a four-year standout as a swimmer at Kalamazoo College in Michigan where she was a three-time Honorable-Mention All-American NCAA Division III and a Division III All-American in the 400 IM in 2007.
Stefl, a four-time Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association all-conference honoree, set conference records in the 200 butterfly and the 400 IM.
During her career at Kalamazoo, she was on the Dean's List for eight semesters, was a four-time All-MIAA Academic Team honoree, and a three-time Academic All-American. She was captain of the squad in her senior season.
Stefl has served as head coach of YPAC of the South Oakland YMCA, an assistant coach for Plum Hollow Country Club, an assistant for the Schenectady-Saratoga Sharks, and served as a swim camp coach for Union College and Harvard University.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo in 2009 in Political Science and her master's in Sport Management from Springfield in 2013.
