Mike Cummings
Football
1988-89
Mike Cummings was a three-year starter on the offensive line for Jim Tressel’s Penguins from 1986-1988. In his second full year as a starter at guard, he helped lead the way as Youngstown State won the Ohio Valley Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division 1-AA Playoffs.
The 1988-89 Vindicator/YSU Student-Athlete of the Year award winner made a couple appearances on the defensive side of the football. In 1986, Cummings made one tackle and in 1985, he made two tackles for a career mark of three tackles. Considered to be one of the strongest players on the team and one of the fastest offensive linemen, he benched 375 pounds and ran a 4.9 forty-yard dash.
However, Cummings contributions were not only on the football field. During his time as a Penguin, this Pittsburgh, Pa., native was a honor roll student. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cummings and is a graduate of Plum High School.Â
