Lester Weaver | 1994-95 Male Athlete of the Year

Lester Weaver
Football
1994-95

Lester Weaver, a native of Tampa, Fla., where he starred at Hillsborough High School, started his collegiate career in the fall of 1990.

Just five years later, helped the Penguins to three Division I-AA National Championships, four straight appearances in the title game (they were runners up in 1992) and the winningest record in Division I in the decade of the ‘90’s (that includes both the I-A and I-AA ranks) at 61-9-2, and .861 winning percentage.

A hard-nosed player and arguably one of the toughest to roam the defensive secondary for the Penguins, his 16 career interceptions ranks him third on the all-time list of enemy passes pilfered, snaring a career high seven this past season and returning them for 136 yards, an average of 19.4 per return.

He had a career high 79 tackles as a junior in 1993 (37 of which were solos) while his four year career shows 179 total tackles (87 solos) and 10 pass deflections. He caused three fumbles and recovered five enemy miscues, and last season got his long awaited chance to perform on the offensive side of the football, rushing for three yards on one carry.

A talented speaker to area youth groups and a positive influence on the area’s school age children, he was  part of this year’s senior class that helped post a 50-9-2 ledger, a fine .836 winning percentage.

For his efforts this past season, he was named to the First-Team of no less than four All-America squads. They are the AFCA/Schooner’s, Associated Press, Sports Network and Football Gazette while serving as team captain his senior season.
