Kristi Echelberry | 1994-95 Female Athlete of the Year

A native of Mantua, Ohio, where she first stared at Crestwood High School, she started seven games as a freshman and that gave Head Coach Ed DiGregorio an indication of the good things to expect for the next three campaigns.

She averaged 9.7 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Penguins during her initial collegiate campaign, respectable by many a player’s standards but career lows for her as she followed that up with 12.6 points and 7.8 rebounds as a sophomore, 12.4 points and 8.0 rebounds as a junior and 12.9 points and 8.0 caroms per outing last season when she served as team captain and earned “Most Valuable Player” laurels.

With 1,281 career points, she ranks sixth on the all-time YSU scoring list and is one of just nine  Penguin cagers to score 1,000-plus points during her collegiate career.

She started 77 of the 108 contests that she played in, hit 50.6 percent of her shots from the field (473-935), canned 323 of 433 free throw attempts (.746), dished out 141 assists, registered 53 blocked shots and pulled down 762 rebounds, an average of 7.1 per fray. She played 2,760 minutes, an average of 24.7 per contest.

This past season as a senior, she was named to the Mid-Continent Conference First Team, earned Mid-Con All-Tournament laurels while as a junior, she was named to the University of Missouri Tournament squad as a sophomore, garnered All Tournament laurels at the UNLV Lady Rebel Classic.
