Indiya Benjamin | YSU Female Athlete of the Year


Indiya Benjamin finished her history-making tenure as the program's point guard holding school career records for assists (629), minutes (3,964), games played (128) and games started (127). The assists record had stood since 1986. Finished her career with 1,288 points, which ranks 12th in school history. She became just the second player to lead the Horizon League in assists in three straight seasons. She is the first YSU guard to be named first or second-team all-league since 1999-00 when the Penguins were members of the Mid-Continent Conference.
 
2017-18 (Senior): Named second-team All-Horizon League...scored 316 points for an average of 9.9 points per game...made 119 field goals and knocked down 46 3-pointers...grabbed 84 rebounds...posted a career-high 176 assists and her 5.5 assists per game were almost a full assist more per game than any other player in the conference...was even better in league play with 109 assists in 18 games for an average of 6.1 per contest...scored the 1,000th point of her career on Nov. 14 against Kent State....finished 31st in the nation in assists per game, and her 176 assists were the 34th-most in the country...had three double-doubles in points and assists.
 
2016-17 (Junior): Played in all 30 games and was the only Penguin to start every game...led the Horizon League with 168 assists and tied for the team lead with 349 points...averaged 11.6 points, 5.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game...averaged 12 points, 5.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds against conference opponents...on the national level, ranked 30th in assists per game and 45th in total assists...her 168 assists ranked as the fifth-most in program history, and she had the most assists ever by a YSU junior.
 
2015-16 (Sophomore): Tied a school record by playing in 34 games and started 33 at point guard...scored 335 points with 90 rebounds and 170 assists for averages of 9.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists...averaged 12.1 points and 4.9 assists while shooting 41.8 percent from beyond the arc in 18 Horizon League games...made 58 3-pointers, making 40.8 percent shooting of her attemprts...finished with 170 assists...led the conference in total assists (170) and tied for the lead in assists per game (5.0)
 
2014-15 (Freshman): Voted to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team...started all 32 games at point guard...led the Penguins with 115 assists while ranking third with 288 points...averaged 3.6 assists and 9.0 points to go along with 2.8 rebounds...her 49 3-pointers were the second most ever by a Penguins freshman behind teammate Nikki Arbanas, who made 55...led all Horizon League freshmen in assists while ranking second in 3-pointers and minutes...in Horizon League play, averaged 8.9 points and 3.6 assists.
 
Personal: Major is nursing...parents are William and Krishana...is the 2017-18 recipient of the Helen R. Stambaugh Women's Basketball Scholarship.
