Chris Vecchione | 1992-93 Male Athlete of the Year

Chris Vecchione
Football
1992-93

Chris Vecchione (Football), a 6-4, 250-pound defensive end helped the Penguins to four of their five I-AA postseason appearances during his stay at YSU, including their only national championship in any sport when they won the crown in 1991, as well as runner up laurels in 1992.

Vecchione, an Accounting major, carries a 3.42 cumulative grade point average as a fifth-year senior.

After a storied scholastic career at nearby tradition rich Cardinal Mooney High School, Vecchione might very well be the answer to a YSU football trivia question in the not so distant future as he will graduate as the only YSU gridder to earn five letters during his collegiate career which spanned the 1988 to 1992 seasons.

He was awarded a letter during his redshirt season in 1990 when he played in the Penguins’ 28-23 victory over arch rival Akron.

During his five year stay at YSU, the Penguins became the top Division I or Division I-AA squad in the nation in the decade of the ‘90’s with a 34-7-1 overall ledger. His five-year mark stood at 47-18-1, a .719 winning percentage.

Last season, he registered 68 total tackles, 36 solos and 32 assists with three sacks (26 yards), three tackles for loss (12 yards), and three pass deflections. His career statistics include 226 total tackles (122 solos and 104 assists), nine and a half sacks (57 yards), one interception, 11 tackles for loss (36 yards) eight pass deflections with two caused fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Vecchione is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Vecchione of Youngstown.
