González Ortega Leads Penguins at Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic

Notre Dame, Ind. – Freshman Inés González Ortega finished tied for 28th on the individual leaderboard to lead the Youngstown State women's golf team at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, which concluded on Sunday at Warren Golf Course.
The Penguins finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a three-round total of 922 to place 11th as a team. YSU opened the tournament with team scores of 311 and 308, in the first two rounds, respectively, on Saturday before recording a 303 in the third and final session on Sunday.
González Ortega finished tied for 28th with a three-round score of 226 (80-74-72) to come in as YSU's top individual finisher for the fourth straight tournament to begin the 2026-27 season. The freshman's one-over-par 72 in the final round on Sunday featured 13 pars and a pair of birdies.
Valentina Peña Anaya carded a three-round total of 229 (75-79-75) while Neeranuch Prajunpanich turned in a three-round 234 (81-77-76).
Sofia Perez Escarcena posted a three-round score of 235 (75-78-82) while freshman Eliza Mercer recorded a three-round 247 (85-82-80). Playing as an individual, Bella Saur concluded the event with a three-round total of 248 (80-84-84).
Purdue pulled away to claim the tournament title at one under par with a three-round team total of 851. Louisville finished 22 shots behind the Boilermakers in second place with an 873, Wisconsin placed third with an 880 and North Florida and Notre Dame each posted an 882 to finish tied for fourth.
Purdue's Samantha Brown earned individual medalist honors at four under par for the tournament with a three-round score of 209 (70-67-72) while Xavier's Isabel Brozena was the runner-up with a 212 (67-70-75).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Oct. 4 when it hosts Mercyhurst in a dual match at Old Avalon Golf Course in Warren, Ohio.
