Bloomfield Hills, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Oakland on Saturday at the Bloomfield Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Penguins fall to 10-11 overall and finish Horizon League play with a 3-2 record. Oakland improves to 7-10 and 3-1.
A Golden Grizzlies win tomorrow over Cleveland State gives them the outright conference title. A loss creates a three-way tie between YSU, Milwaukee and Oakland. However, the Guins will be third seed at the HL Tournament after dropping contests to the Panthers and Golden Grizzlies during the year.
YSU tried to rally after dropping the doubles point. In doubles, Lorena Cedeno and Sarah Partida Garcia won 6-3 at No. 3, but Oakland won 6-2 at No. 2. The decisive match came at No. 1 as Oakland earned a 7-5 win.
In singles, the Guins won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 6 and in three sets at No. 1. The Golden Grizzlies won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
At No. 1, Hanna Telzynska battled for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win. At No. 3, Yeseniia Ovcharova claimed a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win. Yoana Dudova picked up her second straight win at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.
The Penguins will next be in action at the Horizon League Tournament which starts on Friday in Mason, Ohio.
