Crestview Hills, Ky. – The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 5-2 win over Northern Kentucky at the Five Seasons Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.
YSU improves to 10-3 overall this spring with the win while the Norse fall to 2-8 and 0-2 in HL play.
The Guins dropped a hard-fought doubles point before rebounding with five wins in six singles matches.
In doubles, NKU won 7-6 at No. 1 and 7-5 at No. 2. At No. 3, Mihai Haita and Alexis Maulouet picked up a 6-4 win.
YSU won at No. 2 through No. 6 singles in straight sets vs. NKU. At No. 2 Dominik Vonbank earned a tough 7-5, 7-5 victory. At No. 3, Rafael Le Fur earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Oscar Gippet battled for a 6-4, 7-6 (1) win at No. 4. At No. 5, Malo Vernejoul claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win while at No. 6, Haita picked up his first singles win of the spring by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
Of the six Guins who played in singles, four were making their Horizon League debuts.
The Penguins have a quick turnaround as they face IU Indy on Sunday morning. First serve at the West Indy Racquet Club is set for 10 a.m. The Jaguars opened Horizon League play with a 4-3 win over Cleveland State on Saturday.
