Game Preview
The Penguins have won four straight games and five of their last six contests to improve their record to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League play. Their most recent triumph came on Monday in the second leg of this four-game homestand, an 81-58 victory over Oakland. A win against the Norse will give the Penguins their first five-game winning streak since December 2022 and allow them to keep pace with the top tier of the Horizon League standings as conference play gets into full gear in January.
Sophomore guard Erica King had a career night against the Golden Grizzlies on Monday, posting career highs of 23 points and eight rebounds. She scored 13 of those points in the second quarter as the Penguins turned a 16-16 tie into a 42-30 lead heading into halftime. She then scored eight points in the fourth as Youngstown State pulled away for the 23-point victory. Paulina Hernandez provided a strong one-two punch off the bench by scoring 10 of her 16 points in the final period as she reached double digits for the third straight game. Starters Sophia Gregory (15 points), Sarah Baker (12) and Danielle Cameron (9) all scored above their averages.
Casey Santoro was held to four points in Monday's win, but she still posted eight rebounds and six assists from the point guard position. The sixth-year senior ranks among the top 10 players in the Horizon League in scoring, 3-pointers, free-throw percentage, rebounding, assists and minutes. All five starters are averaging between 12.3 and 8.1 points per game, and Hernandez is averaging 7.7 as Youngstown State continues to showcase a balanced and improved attack. The Penguins rank among the top three in the Horizon League in scoring, field-goal percentage, 3-point field-goal percentage and assists.
A Win Would…
- Give the Penguins their first five-game winning streak since Dec. 21, 2022.
- Give the Penguins a 12-4 record, which would be their best mark through 16 games since the 2021-22 team started 15-1. YSU would be 12-4 or better for the sixth time in the last 12 seasons.
- Allow YSU to match its win total from the entire 2024-25 season.
- Improve the Penguins' all-time record against NKU to 12-9 and be their fourth straight win over the Norse.
- Improve YSU's home record to 6-1 this season.
- Give YSU at least five wins in its first six Horizon League games for the fourth time in program history.
- Give head coach Melissa Jackson her 96th career win, her 24th at Youngstown State, and her sixth career victory over Northern Kentucky.
