Evanston, Ill. – The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at Northwestern on Sunday night at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Penguins battled the Wildcats for more than two hours while Rafael Le Fur and Oscar Gippet won first sets against the Big 10 foe.
The Wildcats picked up close straight set wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to clinch the victory.
At No. 1, Alexis Maulouet led 6-5 in the second set after dropping the first set 6-3. At No. 5, Le Fur led his match against Chad Miller, 7-5, 3-2 and at No. 6, Gippet was in a 1-6, 6-2, 1-2 battle.
At No. 2, Matteo Ceradelli dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 7-5 bout, at No. 3, Dominik Vonbank lost 6-3, 6-4 and at No. 4, Malo Vernejoul fell 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Wildcats won 6-1 at No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 3. They also held a 5-1 lead at No. 3 when the point was clinched.
The Penguins, who split their two matches on the opening weekend, play their home opener on Friday against Le Moyne. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
