Shoults Fires 69 to Help Penguins Take First Round Lead at YSU Spring Invitational

Junior Maddi Shoults fired a three-under-par 69 to help the Youngstown State women's golf team take a 10-shot lead following a windy and cold first round of the YSU Spring Invitational on Sunday at Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Warren, Ohio.
The Penguins finished at one under par with a single-round team score of 287 to secure a 10-stroke advantage over second-place Bucknell heading into Monday's second and final session. YSU's 287 is tied for the fourth-lowest 18-hole performance in program history.
Shoults fired a three-under-par round of 69 on Sunday to seize a three-shot lead on the individual leaderboard. The junior's bogey-free first round featured 15 pars and three birdies as she shot a two-under-par 34 on the back nine.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich and Lizzie Saur each carded an even-par round of 72 on Sunday to sit tied for second place following the opening round. Prajunpanich's first round included 14 pars and a pair of birdies while Saur's round featured eight pars and five birdies.
Valentina Peña Anaya is tied for fifth place after recording a two-over-par 74 that included 12 pars and two birdies. The freshman fired a two-under-par 34 on the back nine. Sofia Perez Escarcena is tied for 14th after a first-round 77 while Bella Saur is tied for 27th after turning in an 82.
Playing as individuals, Taylor Morrone carded a first-round 89 while Sophia Rivera finished with a 93.
Bucknell is second in the team standings with a first-round 297 while Saint Francis is in third place after recording a 303.
Tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 for Monday's second and final round are tentatively scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat through links posted on YSUsports.com.
