Youngstown, Ohio — For the third time this season and for the second straight week, Youngstown State's Sophia Gregory has been named the Under Armour Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week. The conference office announced its awards on Sunday afternoon, a day earlier than the normal schedule with the all-league awards set to be announced on Monday.

Gregory's latest nod punctuates her outstanding regular season as she earned the final two awards of 2024-25. She ties teammate Sarah Baker with three weekly nods to lead the league, and she gives the Penguins six freshman honors this season.

Gregory ranked among the top six players in the conference regardless of class last week by averaging 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. She shot 40.6% from the field and made all seven of her free-throw attempts, and she added four assists, three steals and a block during the week.

She began the week by posting 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting while adding six rebounds, a steal and an assist at RMU on Wednesday. In Saturday's victory over Cleveland State, Gregory scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She also contributed three assists, a block and two steals while going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Her block in Saturday's game was her 31st, which is YSU's new freshman record for most blocks in a season.

Gregory and the Penguins will begin play in the 2025 Barbasol Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship on Tuesday at Wright State. The game against the Raiders will start at 5:30 p.m., and it will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.
