Penguins Fall Short to Jaguars on Saturday, 84-79

Youngstown, Ohio -- IU Indianapolis connected on 11 3-pointers and shot nearly 48 percent from deep as it defeated the Youngstown State men's basketball team 84-79 on Saturday afternoon at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.

The Jaguars shot 47.5 percent overall from the field as they went 11-for-23 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Penguins, who outscored the Jags 50-34 in the paint, shot 47.9 percent overall, but went just 4-for-27 from long range for the contest. IU Indy connected on six of 12 3-point attempts in the first half as it built a seven-point halftime lead.

Youngstown State battled back in the second half to even the score at 53-53, but IU Indianapolis responded by going on an 18-7 run after the game was tied to build its largest lead of the day at 71-60 with 5:14 remaining. YSU would go on an 11-4 spurt to get within four points at 75-71 with 1:37 left to play in the final half. However, the Penguins were unable to close the gap further as the Jags sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final minute.

Youngstown State falls to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in Horizon League play while IU Indy improves to 8-16 overall and 4-9 in Horizon League action.

EJ Farmer paced the Penguins with 22 points on 10-for-13 shooting while Cris Carroll scored 17 points and made three 3-pointers. Nico Galette recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Jason Nelson was also in double figures with 11 points.

IU Indy's DeSean Goode scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to lead four Jaguars in double figures. Paul Zilinskas poured in 20 points and connected on four triples while Jarvis Walker added 18 points.

Galette scored the first points of the game for YSU less than a minute into the contest. IU Indy scored the next six points on 3-pointers from Goode and Alec Millender to take a 6-2 lead a little more than two minutes into the game. The Penguins regained a 7-6 edge after a layup from Juwan Maxey and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Nelson with 16:29 remaining in the first half. After the Jaguars went back in front 8-7, Carroll connected on a triple to give the Guins a 10-8 lead with 13:53 left to play in the opening half.

The Jaguars responded by scoring the next seven points to build a five-point lead. Goode made a hook shot in the lane before knocking down a triple, and Zilinskas followed with a pull-up jumper that pushed the visitors' lead to 15-10. Carroll made his second 3-pointer of the first half to cut YSU's deficit to two points before a layup from Galette tied the score at 15-15 with 10:30 on the first-half clock.

The Jags proceeded to put together a 9-2 run that included a 7-0 spurt to lead 24-17 with 7:41 remaining in the first half of action. IU Indianapolis matched its largest lead of the first half again at 26-19. The Penguins scored six of the game's next seven points to pull within two points at 27-25. After a 3-pointer by Sean Craig put IU Indy in front 30-25, YSU scored five of the next seven points to close within two again at 32-30 with 2:31 to go until halftime. The Jaguars closed the opening 20 minutes of play on a 7-2 run to match their largest advantage of the game to that point at 39-32 heading into the intermission.

IU Indy scored the first two points of the second half to take a nine-point lead for the first time at 41-32. Youngstown State started to chip away at IU Indy's advantage, closing within five on 3-point play from Galette with 15:28 to play in the second half. After the two teams traded baskets, a second-chance bucket from YSU's Gabe Dynes pulled the Penguins within three points at 48-45 with 14:30 to play. After a defensive stop, Farmer's driving layup drew YSU within a single point at 48-47. A high-flying, one-handed jam from Ty Harper in transition brought the Guins within one again at 50-49.

Zilinskas hit another 3-pointer to give IU Indy a four-point edge at 53-49 before YSU scored the next four points to even the score at 53-53. A long-distance jumper from IU Indy's Goode made the score 56-53, and Craig followed with another triple to give the Jaguars a 59-53 lead. YSU scored the next five points to get back within a point at 59-58 after a 3-point play by Nelson with 8:43 on the second-half clock. Zilinskas then went on a personal 5-0 scoring run with a driving layup and a 3-pointer to put the Jags ahead 64-58 with 8:13 remaining in the contest.

The IU Indy lead swelled to eight at 66-58 with 6:47 to play, and it reached nine at 69-60 after three free throws from Millender with just over six minutes remaining. The Jags built their first double-digit advantage at 71-60 after a layup by Walker with 5:14 to play. IU Indianapolis went on an 18-7 run after the game was tied at 53-53 to take their largest lead of the afternoon.

Youngstown State will play its next two Horizon League games in the state of Michigan beginning with a visit to Oakland on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ 570 WKBN.
