Clemson, S.C. – Youngstown State's Nia Williams-Matthews broke her school record in the triple jump while Luke Laubacher finished second in the 60m hurdles at the two-day Orange and Purple Invitational held at Clemson's Indoor Track Complex.
Williams-Matthews entered the meet with the school mark of 12.41m, however Esther Solarin jumped 12.46m during the fourth round to become the brief record holder. On her final attempt of the meet, Williams-Matthews leaped 12.49m to reclaim her top spot. In the event, Williams-Matthews finished fourth while Solarin came in fifth.
Laubacher posted a time of 7.78 seconds in the 60m hurdles finals trailing just professional runner Jamal Britt. He had times of 7.80 seconds and 7.83 seconds in the prelims before clocking a best time in the finals.
Mariah Day and Ava Littler both advanced to the semifinals in the 60m hurdles. Day ran a personal-best time of 8.46 seconds in the prelims while Littler had a personal-best time of 8.64 seconds in the semifinals.
Freshman Michael Ballone clocked a personal-best time of 48.96 seconds in the 400m. In the women's pole vault invitational, Melana Schumaker had a best mark of 3.72m.
In the men's pole vault, Lukas Lang tied for eighth clearing a height of 4.87m.
In the men's high jump, the Guins had three of the top seven performers. Zachary Webb and Noah Crozier tied for fifth while Mason Stephens was seventh as all three cleared 5.01m.
The Penguins are back in action next week when they play host to the YSU Mid-Major Invitational presented by Southwoods Health on Friday and Saturday at WATTS.
