Youngstown, Ohio – Six players scored in double figures and four posted double-doubles as the Youngstown State men's basketball team defeated Penn State-Shenango, 112-63, on Friday morning at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
Senior EJ Farmer led the Penguins (13-9) with his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Ty Harper scored 17 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers. Jason Nelson scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers.
Gabe Dynes poured in 13 points with 12 rebounds and swatted four shots while Nico Galette scored 12 points with 10 rebounds and Cris Carroll added 11 points with 12 boards.
Every Youngstown State player scored at least two points.
As team, the Penguins made 15 3-pointers, which ranks tied for fifth on the single-game list, and they set the school record with 72 rebounds.
The Penguins shot 48.8 percent from the field, including 57.9 percent in the first half. The Guins connected on 50 percent (12-for-24) from beyond the arc before halftime.
The Penguins, who never trailed, jumped out to an early 8-0 after making three of their first four shots. After the Lions cut the lead in half, YSU answered with seven straight points to take a 15-4 lead at the first media timeout.
Carroll buried a 3-pointer and Harper followed with two 3s of his own to extend the lead to 24-9 with 12:41 left in the first half.
Over the next four minutes, the Penguins outscored the Lions 15-4 to take 39-13 advantage with 8:16 to go before halftime
Youngstown State entered the locker room at halftime with a 62-25 lead and led by as many as 54, 104-50, with 5:51 left in the second half.
Youngstown State continues its homestand hosting Wright State, Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
