Schumaker, Solarin Win First Titles at HL Outdoor Championships

Rochester, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's track and field team earned wins in the pole vault and long jump on a busy second day of the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the Elaine Leigh Track and Field Complex.
Both Esther Solarin (long jump) and Melana Schumaker (pole vault) collected their first career outdoor Horizon League titles on a windy day at the track.
Solarin improved on her school record to jump 6.10m and take the title. Daisha Decree finished fifth with a leap of 5.70m.
The Guins were dominate in the pole vault claiming the top five places on the podium. Schumaker cleared 4.05m to pick up the win while Erin Bogard and Ainsley Hamsher tied for second at 3.95m. Finishing fourth was Kaitlyn Eger who had a best mark of 3.85m while Gabbi Selman was fifth at 3.65m.
In the team standings, the Guins are in second with 73 points while Milwaukee has the lead with 79.5 after eight of 21 events. Purdue Fort Wayne is third with 43.
In the 400m, Melody Harloff advanced to the finals running a time of 57.19 seconds. In the 100m dash, Nia Grose had the second-fastest time at 11.94 seconds to reach tomorrow's final. In the 200m, Harloff (24.83 seconds) and Grose (24.96 seconds) moved onto the finals.
In the heptathlon, Teddi Kinsey finished eighth with a career-best 4,069 points. In the shot put, Molly Radcliffe was seventh with a throw of 12.86m.
The final day of competition begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday with the women's hammer throw and high jump. Running events are set to get underway at noon.
