Youngstown State's Madie Smithco and Danae Rugola have each earned Valeo Horizon League All-Academic honors for the 2023-24 season, the league office announced on Monday. Smithco was one of five student-athletes named to the 2024 Valeo Horizon League Women's Golf All-Academic Team while Rugola was an honorable-mention selection.
Smithco was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the second straight season while Rugola earned all-academic recognition for the third consecutive campaign.
Smithco maintains a 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major at Youngstown State. The Cranberry Township, Pa., native was named to the College Sports Communicators At-Large Academic All-District Team in 2022-23, and she has been named a WGCA All-American Scholar each of the last two seasons.
Smithco averaged a school-record 73.7 strokes per round over seven tournaments and 16 rounds in 2023-24 before missing the final four events of the season due to injury. She earned six top-10 finishes including a first-place performance at Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational. Smithco was also named Horizon League Women's Golfer of the Week on March 7.
Rugola maintains a 4.0 GPA as an education major at Youngstown State. The Uniontown, Pa., native earns honorable mention honors in 2023-24 after being named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team in 2021-22 and 2022-23. Rugola was named to the College Sports Communicators At-Large Academic All-District Team in 2022-23, and she has been named a WGCA All-American Scholar each of the last four seasons.
Rugola competed in six tournaments and 14 rounds with a 79.6 strokes-per-round average and a low round of 68 in 2023-24. The fifth-year senior earned medalist honors at the season-opening YSU Kickoff before missing the final four events of the fall slate due to injury. She set a new program record with 100 rounds played in her YSU career.
