A Glimpse at the Guins

  • With one day of games remaining in the regular season, Youngstown State can still finish as high as a tie for fourth and place as low as a three-way tie for seventh. With six teams having conference records between 10-9 and 8-11, a slew of seeding possibilities remain with five games tipping between 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Youngstown State went 5-2 in February after entering the month in danger of being one of the bottom two seeds. The Penguins were 8-14 overall and 4-8 against the league after a 69-63 loss at IUPUI on Jan. 31, and they are now 13-16 overall and 9-10 in conference play. YSU has won four straight league road games.
  • The Penguins went toe-to-toe with league-leading Cleveland State on Tuesday in a 56-53 loss at Beeghly Center. It was a huge improvement from when the Vikings won by 42 in Cleveland on Jan. 6. YSU held its Northeast Ohio rivals to a season-low 29.3% shooting, but the Penguins came up just short at the buzzer.
  • YSU ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring defense at 61.7 points per game. Nine of the Penguins' 16 losses have come when they've allowed 66 points or fewer, and they have dropped seven games by six points or less.
  • YSU ranks 17th nationally in free-throw percentage at 77.7%, and the Penguins are shooting a league-best 80.7% from the line in conference play.
  • Dena Jarrells is the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week after she scored a career-high-tying 25 points at Northern Kentucky last week. Jarrells leads the conference with 2.2 3-pointers per game, and she's fourth in assists per game.
  • Malia Magestro and Emily Saunders are both averaging 12.1 points per game in Horizon League play, which ranks 13th and 14th in the conference. Saunders ranks among the top 25 players nationally with a .606 field-goal percentage and 2.2 blocks per game for the season.
  • John Nicolais, who is in his 11th season at YSU, is serving as interim head coach. John Barnes had been on leave to focus on family since Oct. 2 before announcing his resignation as head coach on Jan. 19.
  • YSU has nine returning letterwinners and three starters back from last year's squad that went 19-11 and tied for third in the Horizon League standings.
  • YSU is 40-21 in Horizon League play since the start of the 2021-22 season, and it has won at least 13 conference games in three of the past six campaigns.

Program Staples

  • Shooting 3s: Youngstown State led the Horizon League in 3-pointers per game in eight straight seasons from 2014-15 through 2021-22. The Penguins have made at least 200 3-pointers every season since 2010-11 except the COVID-19-shortened campaign in 2020-21. Individually, a Penguin has ranked in the top seven of the Horizon League individually in 3s per game in each of the last 11 seasons.
  • Strong In The Post: The Penguins have had a post be named to the Horizon League's first, second or third-team in nine of the last 11 seasons and 14 times in the last 17. They've had a first-team honoree in three of the last five years, including each of the last two.

  • Academics: YSU has appeared on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll 12 times in the last 13 years. The Penguins have been in the top 10 in five of the last eight years. The Penguins were second in both 2019-20 and 2020-21, and they were 12th in 2022-23.
  • Postseason Play: YSU has played in the WNIT or the WBI in six of the last 11 years.

Purdue Fort Wayne has already clinched a top-four seed in the 2024 Barbasol Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship. The 'Dons 19 wins are their most since 2010-11.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne is fifth in the Horizon League in both scoring offense (70.5 ppg) and scoring defense (63.5 ppg), and it is holding conference opponents to 61.2 points on average. The Mastodons lead the conference and rank 19th in the country with 8.5 3-pointers per game, and four players have made at least 30 3s. Purdue Fort Wayne is third in the league in turnover margin at plus-3.6, and four different Mastodons have at least 50 assists.
