Coral Springs, Fla. - The Youngstown State women's golf team posted the fourth-highest Division I team GPA in the nation during the 2022-23 academic year, the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced on Tuesday.
The Penguins posted the fourth-highest Division I team GPA in the country with a mark of 3.870. Only Marshall (3.945), Denver (3.932) and Michigan State (3.897) recorded higher team GPAs during the 2022-23 academic year. Marshall was awarded the 2022-23 WGCA All-Scholar Team GPA Award for having the highest team GPA in the nation.
The WGCA All-Scholar Team GPA Awards recognize the women's collegiate golf programs with the highest collective average team GPA which includes all the team's student-athletes for the 2022-23 season. Youngstown State joined Green Bay as one of two Horizon League programs to appear on the WGCA's Top-25 list. YSU also appeared on the WGCA's Top-25 list for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
Earlier this month, four Penguins were recognized as WGCA All-American Scholars for their impressive work in the classroom in 2022-23. Danae Rugola received the honor for the fourth consecutive season while Madie Smithco and Lizzie Saur were each recognized for the second straight campaign. Titita Loudtragulngam was also honored after her debut season as a Penguin. The program has now had at least two golfers earn the honor in 10 straight seasons.
Rugola and Smithco were each named to the 2023 Horizon League All-Academic Team for their combined performance on the course and in the classroom. In addition, the pair was named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators At-Large Academic All-District Team.
The YSU women's golf program was also honored with the Horizon League Raise Your Sights award for the 2022-23 academic year. The Raise Your Sights awards are given annually to the best sport teams academically and is based on combined grade point average (GPA) from the current academic year. The award recognizes the top academic male and female team from each Horizon League institution.
