
Six Penguins, Program Earn ITA Academic Accolades

The Youngstown State men's tennis program was named an All-Academic Team while six student-athletes were tabbed Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the organization announced on Monday.
The Penguins who were named Scholar-Athletes include Laurentiu Mandocescu, Will Everett, Javi Gonzalez Pla, Clement Mainguy, David Alvarez Moreno and Asier Pena Ibanez. Mandocescu was named to the team for the fourth consecutive year while Ibanez is a three-time selection.
In 2023, 959 Division I Men's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and 162 men's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2022 and spring 2023).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letterwinner, 2.) have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
