2022-23 Men's Tennis Season In Review

The Youngstown State men's tennis team returned to the Horizon League semifinals for the sixth consecutive tournament and earned at least 12 dual victories for the sixth completed season in a row.

Here is a list of accomplishments for the program this season:

YSU finished the year with an overall record of 13-11 marking the fifth time in six years it had a winning record. The Guins have won at least 12 matches in every full season since 2016-17 (excluding 2020).
The Penguins posted a 6-2 record in Horizon League play.
At home, YSU was an impressive 8-1, which included an eight-match winning streak after dropping a tough 4-3 season opener. In three seasons at the YSU Tennis Center, YSU is an impressive 26-3.
In Horizon League play, YSU was 27-21 in singles matches and 14-8 in doubles matches.
For the entire year, YSU was 103-100 in singles matches and 70-66 in dual singles matches.
YSU won at least nine matches at every spot in the lineup.
The Penguins had three seniors on the 2022-23 roster – Laurentiu Mandocescu, Will Everett and Javi Pla.
Mandocesu finished his career with 56 singles wins which is seventh most in school history. He also finished with 49 doubles victories which is fifth most at YSU. Everett had 39 singles wins and finished ranked fourth all-time with 51 doubles wins. Pla recorded 27 singles wins in his brief two-year career.
The Guins have advanced to the Horizon League semifinals in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2014 (no tournament was held in 2020).
At the HL Championships, YSU beat Tennessee State 4-1 before falling to eventual champion Belmont, 4-1.
Six players won at least 12 singles matches – Pla (18), David Alvarez Moreno (15), Clement Mainguy (15), Nathan Favier (14), Harry Fouzas (13) and Mandocescu (12).
In HL play, Pla was an impressive 8-0. Finishing with 5-3 conference records were Fouzas and Mainguy.
In doubles play, Fouzas and Mandocescu went 10-6 while Everett and Moreno were 9-6. In HL play, Everett and Moreno went 6-2 while Fouzas and Mandocescu were 5-3.
Five players won at least 12 doubles matches. Everett had a team-high 16 wins while Mandocescu was part of 15 victories.
The Penguins played matches in Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan.
