
Penguins Earn Best Horizon League Finish to Highlight 2022-23 Women’s Swimming and Diving Season

The Youngstown State women's swimming and diving program earned its best-ever finish at the Horizon League Championships to highlight an impressive and memorable 2022-23 season.
Horizon League Championship Highlights
- The Penguins delivered their top program finish at the meet, placing fourth in team standings with 431 points while delivering 10 top-8 finishes.
- Standout freshman Miriam Frass found the podium in three different events. Frass became the first YSU woman since 2018 to finish runner-up at the conference championships, accomplishing the feat in two events: 500 and 1650 freestyle.
- Frass broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle that had stood since 2014 with a time of 16:44.63 to finish second. Frass also finished runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a personal-best time of 4:53.48 which was less than half a second away from the school record. To round out her three podium finishes, she placed third in the 200 freestyle, clocking a 1:50.82.
- Senior diver Kayla Wrasman earned spots in both the one-meter and three-meter diving finals. In the three-meter, she placed a career-high fifth at the meet with a score of 244.30. She was seventh in the one-meter dive, scoring a 236.65.
- Sophomore Hailey Clark rounded out the top five in the women's 1650 freestyle with an impressive time of 17:02.70. She also picked up a seventh-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 2:23.48. Clark also won the consolation final of the 500 freestyle, clocking a 4:58.44 for a ninth-place overall finish.
- Freshman Chiara Vetter clocked a 1:04.29 in the 100 breaststroke to finish fifth-overall.
- Sophomore Macy Wang rounded out the top eight in the 400 IM with a time of 4:40.49.
- Freshman Jordan Truelsch picked-up an eighth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.04.
- Sophomore Oliwia Kaniak won the consolation final of the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:05.56 for a ninth-place overall finish.
- Freshman Anna Kozinska earned a victory in the consolation final of the 100 backstroke, swimming the third-fastest time in YSU history with a 56.97 to place ninth overall.
- Junior Brooke Schuette finished ninth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:36.50.
- The Penguins swam season-bests in four relays at the meet: 400 free relay, 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay, and 800 free relay. They swam the second-fastest time in program history in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:31.39.
Additional Highlights
- Miriam Frass qualified for nationals by finishing fourth out of a talented field of 110 swimmers in the women's 5k at the CSCAA Open Water National Championships. Frass clocked a 58:23.68 to accomplish this incredible feat.
- The Penguins defeated conference foe Cleveland State, 199-94, picking up 12 event victories. Individual event winners were Miriam Frass (200, 500, and 1000 free), Oliwia Kaniak (100 and 200 breast), Kayla Wrasman (one-meter and three-meter dives), Anna Kozinska (100 back), Allison Ramirez Romero (200 back), Jordan Truelsch (200 back), and Macy Wang (2:11.12).
- Miriam Frass won the women's 500 free at the Akron Zips Classic as well as finished second in the 1650 free.
- YSU defeated St. Francis, 170-124, in a double dual with Niagara. Winning events were Miriam Frass (500 and 1000 free), Anna Kozinska (100 back), and Kayla Wrasman (one-meter and three-meter dives).
- The Penguins earned a victory over Ohio Wesleyan, 254-34, in a double dual with Denison. Kayla Wrasman swept the one- and three-meter diving events while Chiara Vetter (100 breast), Isabelle Hanson (100 back), Oliwia Kaniak (50 breast), and Ellen Linscheid (one-meter) earned runner-up finishes throughout the meet.
- Multiple Guins earned top-three event finishes in YSU's tri-meet against Horizon League opponents, Oakland and IUPUI: Miriam Frass (500, 1000 free, and 1650 free), Kayla Wrasman (one-meter dive), and Anna Kozinska (100 and 200 back).
- Chiara Vetter won the 100 breast at the Butler Invitational, clocking a 1:04.83, which ranks fifth-fastest in YSU history.
Horizon League Weekly Honors
- Freshman Miriam Frass was named the Nike #HLSD Women's Swimmer of the Week three times throughout the 2022-23 season (Nov. 9, Dec. 21, and Jan. 11).
- Senior Kayla Wrasman earned the Nike #HLSD Women's Diver of the Week honor three times in 2022-23 (Nov. 9, Dec. 7, and Jan. 11).
Academic Excellence
- Sophomores Hailey Clark and Macy Wang were named to the Valeo #HLSD All-Academic Team for their incredible performances in the pool and in the classroom.
- The Penguins garnered CSCAA Scholar All-American Honors for their impressive fall semester.
