Reid’s Season-High Leads Penguins Past Western Michigan, 72-68

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Senior Ziggy Reid scored a season-high points to lead the Youngstown State men's basketball team to a 72-68 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon at University Arena.

The Penguins, who won their fourth straight game, improve to 7-3 on the year while the Broncos fall to 2-7.

Reid connected on 9-of-17 from the field and made a season-best five 3-pointers, and sophomore John Lovelace, Jr., scored 10 points with six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Youngstown State led by as many as 14 points, 36-22, late in the first half, but Western Michigan clawed its way back into the game and eventually took a 53-51 lead after a Seth Hubbard 3-pointer at the 8:46 mark.

Reid scored the next seven points to regain a five-point lead, 58-53, for the Penguins with 6:52 to go. Following a WMU bucket, a driving layup by DJ Burns and a fast-break layup by Brett Thompson put the Penguins up seven.

Reid hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to extend the Penguins lead to eight, 65-57, and his fifth 3-pointer put the Penguins up 70-63 with 45 seconds to go.

Western Michigan scored the next five points to get within two, but Reid's two free throws with 15 seconds left sealed the win.

Western Michigan jumped out 7-4 lead before the Penguins used a 12-2 run to take a 16-9 advantage after a dunk by Gabe Dynes.

The Broncos trimmed the deficit down to four, 26-22, but the Penguins scored 10 straight points on 3-pointer by Reid, a jumper by Bryson Langdon, a 3-pointer by Lovelace and another dunk by Dynes for a 36-22 lead with 4:22 left before halftime.

Western Michigan scored eight of the last nine points to close out the half and cut the Penguins lead to 37-30 at the intermission.

Youngstown State returns home to host Bethany, Thursday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
