Youngstown, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's basketball team tied two school single-game records with 18 made 3-pointers and 33 assists en route to a 105-74 win over IUPUI on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in Horizon League play while the Jaguars fall to 3-13 overall and 0-5 in the league. It marks Youngstown State's first 12-5 start since 1997-98.
Freshman John Lovelace, Jr., scored a team-high 16 points with a career-high four 3-pointers to lead the Penguins. Senior Dwayne Cohill recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists, and scored the 1,000th point of his college career.
Malek Green Bryce McBride and Chris Shelton each scored 12 points for the Penguins. McBride dished out six assists while Shelton connected on 4-for-5 from 3-point range.
Nine different players made at least one 3-pointer, 12 different players scored, and 11 players were credited with an assist for the Penguins.
IUPUI scored the first four points of the game, and after a timeout, Youngstown State rattled off 24 straight points over four minutes to quickly take a 20-point lead. The Penguins never looked back.
Youngstown State shot a season-best 59.4 percent from the field, a season-high 52.9 percent from 3-point range, and connected on 91.7 percent from the free throw line.
Youngstown State begins a four-game road swing against Detroit Mercy, Thursday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Calihan Hall in Detroit, Mich.
