Tipoff Notes
Youngstown State closes out its four-game homestand when it entertains Horizon League foe IUPUI, Saturday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Beeghly Center and the game will be broadcast on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.

Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off an impressive 78-56 win over Robert Morris on Jan. 5 at Beeghly Center. Senior Dwayne Cohill scored a game-high 23 points while Brandon Rush poured in 14 points and Malek Green added 12 points.

The IUPUI Series
This is the 20th meeting between Youngstown State and IUPUI in a series that dates back to 1975. The Penguins own a 17-2 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last three contests.  Last season, Youngstown State swept the season series, defeating the Jaguars, 74-71, on Feb. 19, at Beeghly Center, and 61-55 in Indianapolis, Ind.  The Penguins have won 10 games against the Jaguars in Beeghly Center while both of IUPUI victories have been in Youngstown. The Penguins own a record of 7-0 in games played in Indianapolis against the Jaguars.

Scouting IUPUI
IUPUI enters the game with a 3-12 overall record and a 0-6 mark in the Horizon League. The Jaguars have lost their last two games after defeating Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 20, 2022. Leading IUPUI is Jlynn Counter with 13.3 points per game. The Jaguars are averaging 60.5 points per game while allowing 71.3 points per contest.

A Win Would...

  • Improve YSU's record to 12-5 and match the Penguins' best record after 17 games since going 12-5 in 1997-98 and 1994-95.
  • Mark just the third time since 1981-82 YSU has started 12-5 through 17 games.
  • Give the Penguins a 4-2 record in Horizon League play and a 3-1 mark in home conference games.
  • Mark the fourth straight win over IUPUI
  • Be YSU's 18th win over IUPUI and the 11th victory over the Jaguars at Beeghly Center.
  • Improve the Penguins' record to 7-2 at home.
  • Be the 208th in Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun's career and his 84th at Youngstown State.
  • Make Jerrod Calhoun the third coach in school history to record at least 84 wins.

Cohill Needs Seven for 1,000
Senior Dwayne Cohill is approaching a historic career-scoring milestone. Cohill has scored 993 points in his career and needs just seven more to reach 1,000. He also needs just 198 more to become the 42nd player in YSU history to reach 1,000 points as a Penguin.

Hot Start
Youngstown State is off to one of the best starts in its Division I history. The Penguins' 11-5  record is tied for the best start after 16 games since 1997-98. It also marks just the fourth time since 1981-82 that Youngstown State has won 11 times in its first 16 contests. The last time YSU started 11-5 was in 1997-98. Youngstown State started 12-4 in 1994-95 and 1983-84. The Penguins best start after 16 games was 12-4 in 1994-95 while YSU went 11-5 in 1997-98 and 1983-84.

Guins Nationally
As of Jan. 6, Youngstown State ranks among the top 30 nationally in four different categories. The Penguins ranked 12th with a 78.1free-throw percentage, 13th in scoring with 83.7 points per game, and 19 with a 49.3 field-goal percentage. Youngstown State is also 28th with .557 effective field-goal percentage and 27th with a .381 3-point percentage. Senior Bryce McBride ranks second in the nation with a .978 free-throw percentage while Adrian Nelson is 22nd nationally with six double-doubles and and 14th with 152 total rebounds. 

Sweet Charity
Youngstown State has been taking advantage of its time at the free-throw line this season. The Penguins lead the Horizon League and rank 12th in the nation with a .781 free-throw percentage.  Senior Bryce McBride ranks second in the nation the league with a .978 free-throw percentage while Dwayne Cohill is fourth in the league at .848.

No Rush to Judgement
Brandon Rush has been one of the Penguins top offensive weapons since being inserted into the starting lineup on Dec. 8. Rush has scored in double figures in each game and averaged 19.0 points per game during that span. Rush has connected on 49-of-91 or 53.8 percent of his field-goal attempts and 24-of-51 or 47.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. He scored a season-high 26 points against both Ohio on Dec. 11 and Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 31.
