Kordupel Paces Penguins at Valpo Fall Invitational

Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel finished tied for 17th individually to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to an eighth-place finish as a team on Tuesday in the Valpo Fall Invitational at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind.
The Penguins finished with a three-round team total of 901 to place eighth. YSU recorded a 294 in the opening round on Monday before posting a 302 and a 300 in the final two rounds, respectively. Youngstown State finished eight strokes behind seventh-place Cleveland State.
Kordupel finished tied for 17th with a three-round score of 221 (71-78-72). The senior's season-low, one-under-par 71 in the opening round featured 10 pars and five birdies as he made par or better on 10 of his first 11 holes. The Boardman, Ohio, native fired an even-par 36 on the front nine and a one-under-par 35 on the back nine during the first round. Kordupel's second-round 78 included seven pars and three birdies as he shot a one-over-par 37 on the front nine. The senior's even-par 72 in the final round featured 10 pars and four birdies as he fired a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.
Cole Christman finished tied for 28th with a three-round 226 (76-80-70). The senior's first-round 76 featured nine pars and three birdies while his second-round 80 included seven pars, three birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 1. Christman's two-under-par 70 in the final round on Tuesday featured 12 pars and four birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his final 13 holes. The Boardman, Ohio, native shot a one-under-par 35 on both the front and back nines during the final session.
Ryan Sam finished tied for 38th with a three-round 228 (75-73-80). The true freshman's opening-round 75 featured eight pars and four birdies as he carded a one-under-par 35 on the back nine. Sam's career-low, one-over-par 73 in the second round included 13 pars and a pair of birdies as he fired a one-under-par 35 on the back nine. The Canfield, Ohio, native made par or better on 14 of his final 15 holes during the second session. Sam's final-round 80 featured eight pars and a pair of birdies.
Dean Austalosh finished tied for 57th with a three-round 231 (77-76-78). The junior's opening-round 77 featured 14 pars while his second-round 76 included nine pars and three birdies. The Campbell, Ohio, native recorded an even-par 36 on the front nine during the second session. Austalosh's final-round 78 featured 12 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 1.
Cade Kreps finished 66th with a three-round total of 233 (78-75-80). The senior's first-round 78 featured seven pars and three birdies as he posted a one-over-par 37 on the front nine. Kreps' second-round 75 included 11 pars and two birdies as he shot an even-par 36 on the back nine. The senior's final-round 80 saw him card nine pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 10.
Playing as an individual, Jacob Sylak recorded a three-round score of 246 (84-82-80). The sophomore's first-round 84 featured six pars and two birdies while his second-round 82 included 10 pars. Sylak's final-round 80 featured 10 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 3.
Valparaiso won the tournament title by an impressive 34 strokes at 16 under par with a three-round team total of 848. Loyola Chicago finished as the runner up with an 882 while DePaul placed third with an 883. Purdue Fort Wayne finished fourth with an 884 while Northern Kentucky rounded out the top five with an 887. YSU finished in front of fellow Horizon League members IUPUI, Robert Morris, Green Bay and Detroit Mercy.
Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti earned medalist honors by one stroke at eight under par with a three-round 208 (70-69-69).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Oct. 3-4 with the Tom Tontimonia Invitational hosted by Cleveland State at Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio.
