The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs will compete in 11 regular-season meets during the 2022-23 season before heading to the Horizon League Championships starting on February 15, head coach Brad Smith announced.
When asked about the upcoming season, Coach Smith stated "I'm incredibly proud of the group and our accomplishments that have gotten us to where we are and am excited for the season and new faces joining a growing team. We made major improvements over the last three seasons and it showed at conference championships last year. The leadership within our team continues to evolve as does the experience. We'll be improved in areas we weren't as strong in last season and we've added depth to others with a talented freshman class and it's been wonderful to work with them. This year's schedule continues to get more competitive and will help our team gain valuable experience leading up to conference championships."
Three meets are scheduled to take place on the Penguins home turf, the Beeghly Natatorium; however, two home meets will be diving only.
The Penguins will open competition at the Akron Zips Classic beginning on October 7. YSU will then have a three-week hiatus before heading to take on Niagara and St. Francis (Pa.) on October 29 in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The following week, the Penguins will return home to host Cleveland State on November 5 in the sole home meet for both the swimming and diving programs altogether.
The diving program will be next in action at the West Virginia Invite beginning on November 17 in Morgantown, W.V.
The swimming and diving programs will return to competition together at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational which will begin on December 1 in Oxford, Ohio.
The Penguins final meet of 2022 will take place at the CSCAA Open Water National Championships in Biscayne Bay, Fla. on December 19.
YSU will return to action on January 7 as its swimming and diving programs are set to divide and conquer at home and away. The swimming program will head to Duquesne where the women will compete against the Dukes, and the men will take on Niagara. The diving program will remain home to host the Duquesne diving team in the Beeghly Natatorium.
The following week, Youngstown State will take on conference foes, Oakland and IUPUI, in a two-day meet hosted by Oakland beginning on January 13 in Rochester, Mich.
The swimmers will see a brief break in competition the following weekend while diving hosts Clarion on January 21 in their final home meet of the 2022-23 season.
