Rochester, Mich. – The Youngstown State men's track and field team picked up its third straight Horizon League Outdoor Championship on Sunday at a sunny and windy afternoon at the at the Elaine Leigh Track & Field Complex.
The title was YSU's sixth overall since 2014. It was the Guins's first title at Oakland's home track after finishing as the runner-up in 2015 and 2018 in Rochester.
On the final day of action, YSU picked up wins in the 100m, 110m hurdles, 800m, 1500m and the triple jumps and triple jumps. The Penguins scored 257 points in the meet to beat Milwaukee by 86 points. Oakland placed third with 141.5 points. The 252 points were the second most scored at league meet trailing only the 311.5 YSU scored in 2019.
Sean Peterson led the charge with wins in the 800m and 1,500m runs. His first win of the day came in the 1,500m when he finished with a time of 3:54.12. In the same event,
Derek Basinger picked up a third-place finish with a time of 3:55.81 while
Riley Jackson was fourth clocking a 3:56.06.
In the 800m, Peterson ran a winning time of 1:51.01 while C.J. Schumacher finished fourth posting a time of 1:54.91 and
Evan Alten was sixth at 1:55.92.
In the 100m,
Anthony Woods cruised to the title running a fast 10.35 race. He won the event by 0.18.
Christian Ford notched a fourth-place finish with a time of 10.66 seconds.
In the 110m hurdles, freshman
Luke Laubacher earned the title in his HL outdoor debut. Laubacher ran a 14.37 to win by .08 over Milwaukee's Dane Nelson.
Jakari Lomax defended his triple jump crown with a leap of 15.49m.
Daiquain Watson came in second with a top mark of 14.81m and
Samuel Challis was fifth at 14.25m.
Terron Taylor defended his title in the high jump clearing the bar at 2.07m.
In the hammer throw,
Zach Gehm had a second-place throw of 55.64m and
Zach Gray was third at 53.32m.
