Box Score Youngstown – Senior Lilly Ritz scored 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field to lead the Youngstown State women's basketball team past West Virginia Tech, 102-39, on Tuesday evening at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins, who have won four straight games, improve to 5-3 on the season while the Golden Bears fall to 9-4.
Shay-Lee Kirby scored a season-high 13 points with six rebounds while Emily Saunders scored a career-high 10 points and Jen Wendler added 10 points. All 14 YSU players scored in the game, and no starter played more than 15 minutes.
The Penguins' 63-point margin of victory ranks as the third highest in school history. The last time YSU scored at least 100 points was 102 against Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 5, 2021. The Penguins also had their highest-scoring first half ever with 63 as they build a 63-24 lead after 20 minutes.
For the game, Youngstown State shot 59.4 percent (41-for-69) and made 10 3-pointers.
The Penguins scored the first 10 points of the game on four buckets and two free throws from Ritz. Ritz finished the night 8-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and her 20 points came in just 6:35 of game action.
The Golden Bears scored their first basket at the 7:31 mark of the first quarter, and a driving layup by Alva Hedrich with 5:52 on the clock made the score 12-4. Paige Shy scored on YSU's possession, and the Penguins went on a 15-0 run to take a 27-4 lead. The margin was 29-6 at the end of the quarter.
Ritz finished the first quarter with 16 points and was 7-for-7 from the field with two free throws. The Penguins shot 56.5 percent from the field in the first quarter and limited the Golden Bears to 21.4 percent from the floor.
Youngstown State stayed hot in the second quarter making seven of its first eight shots to build a 47-17 lead midway through the stanza. The margin extended to 54-17 on a driving layup by Malia Magestro at the 3:35 mark.
The Penguins finished the quarter connecting on 13-of-21 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, to take a 63-24 lead into the locker room. Six different players made 3-pointers for the Penguins in the second quarter.
The Penguins' 34 points scored in the second quarter are the second most in school history, while the 63 points scored in the first half are the third most in school history.
In the third quarter, Youngstown State made 11 of its 16 field-goal attempts (68.8 percent) and made three 3-pointers to push its lead to 93-34 at the end of three. The margin reached 50 for the first time on a Lindsey Linard basket with 2:13 on the third-quarter clock.
Youngstown State shot 44.4 percent in the final 10 minutes, and Saunders scored on the first possession of the fourth period give YSU its first 60-point edge at 95-34. The final margin was the largest of the game.
WVU Tech, an NAIA school, was led by Hedrich's 11 points. The Golden Bears shot 29.1% as a team and were 5-for-23 from 3-point range.
The Penguins continue their six-game homestand when they host Canisius, Saturday, Dec. 10. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
