Game Preview
- Youngstown State will go for a road sweep to begin Horizon League play as it heads to Wright State for a Sunday afternoon game against the Raiders. Tipoff at the Nutter Center is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+. The YSU men's team will also play at Wright State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
- The Penguins are playing at Wright State for the first time since 2019-20. Youngstown State hosted the Raiders for two games in 2020-21 in the league's modified schedule format for COVID-19 protocols, and the 2021-22 game in Dayton was canceled due to positive cases in Wright State's program. The only players who have played at Wright State as Penguins are Mady Aulbach and Jen Wendler.
- YSU will try to conquer a tough road arena for the second time in three days. The Penguins won at NKU for just the second time in seven tries on Friday, and they will look to win a contested game at the Nutter Center for the first time since Feb. 3, 2013. The Penguins were awarded a forfeit win for the game scheduled at WSU last season.
- YSU showed it can win without depending on 3-pointers on Friday as it had to grind for a 59-55 win over the Norse. The Penguins trailed by eight in the second half, but they ended the third quarter on an 18-9 run and fought through a tight fourth period. YSU attempted just 15 3-pointers in the game and made four. Malia Magestro scored a game-high 21 points for her second straight 20-point game, and preseason all-league pick Lilly Ritz scored the go-ahead basket with 11.4 seconds left.
- The Penguins won the school's first regular-season conference title in 23 years last season as it shared the Horizon League crown with IUPUI. YSU went 24-7 overall and advanced to the Women's NIT. In 2022-23, five players return – Aulbach, Megan Callahan, Magestro, Ritz and Paige Shy – who started at least 20 games on last year's team.
- While the core of the roster is familiar, the target on the Penguins' back is not. For the first time in program history, Youngstown State was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League by the conference's coaches. Last season, YSU was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll.
- This is YSU's 10th season under Head Coach John Barnes, who was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2021-22. Barnes is second in career victories at YSU with 154, and his .558Â winning percentage is the third-best mark in school history.
