Highland Heights, Ky. -- Malek Green recorded his third double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high 15 rebounds but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 77-73 double overtime decision to Northern Kentucky on Thursday evening at Truist Arena.
The Penguins fall to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in Horizon League play while the Norse improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Senior Dwayne Cohill poured in 21 points while Adrian Nelson scored 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Penguins batted through 12 lead changes and 10 ties through the first 39 minutes before a Cohill driving layup gave the Penguins a 56-51 lead with 1:15 left.
Northern Kentucky's Marques Warrick cut the Penguins lead to three with two free throws and, after a YSU turnover on the ensuing inbound, Trevon Faulkner tied the game, 56-56, with a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left.
Two free throws by Cohill put the Penguins up back up two with 32 seconds left, but Warrick hit a jumper to knot the game at 58-58 with 23 seconds to go and forced overtime.
In the overtime, the Norse jumped out to a three-point lead after a jumper by Warrick with 2:44 left.
The Penguins scored the next six points to grab a 65-62 lead. Green split a pair of free throws and Nelson's putback tied the game at 62-62 Green gavet the Penguins a 65-62 lead with a 3-pointer with 1:06 left.
NKU's Xavier Rhodes tied the game with a 3-pointer with 32 left and forced the second overtime.
The Norse scored the first four points of the second overtime but a Cohill 3-pointer cut the Norse lead to 69-68 and his two free throws got the Penguins within one at 71-70 with 2:41 remaining.
Northern Kentucky scored six of the final eight points to seal the victory.
Youngstown State visits Wright State, Sunday, Dec. 4. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.
