Game Preview

  • Youngstown State makes a quick stop at home to host St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game against the Terriers will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.
  • The Penguins are in a stretch of playing five out of six on the road, and Saturday is the lone home game between YSU's opener on Nov. 7 and a contest against WVU Tech on Dec. 6. Next week's road games at Northern Kentucky and Wright State will open Horizon League play for Youngstown State.
  • The Penguins hope the rims in Beeghly Center are friendlier than the last two gyms they played in as they look to gain some positive shooting momentum before conference play begins. YSU is 5-for-45 from 3-point range in its last two games, and the Penguins are 1-3 overall after three straight road losses to Penn State, Akron and Western Michigan.
  • The Penguins won the school's first regular-season conference title in 23 years last season as it shared the Horizon League crown with IUPUI. YSU went 24-7 overall and advanced to the Women's NIT behind what was largely a roster full of new faces. Now in 2022-23, five players return – Mady Aulbach, Megan Callahan, Malia Magestro, Lilly Ritz and Paige Shy – who started at least 20 games on last year's team that hung a championship banner.
  • While the core of the roster is familiar, the target on the Penguins' back is not. For the first time in program history, Youngstown State was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League by the conference's coaches. Last season, YSU was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll.
  • Ritz was named the Horizon League Player of the Week after her 27-point, 20-rebound performance against Wofford to start the season. The Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League selection has three double-doubles in YSU's first four games and is averaging 19.8 points and 13.0 rebounds per game.
  • This is YSU's 10th season under Head Coach John Barnes, who was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2021-22. Barnes is second in career victories at YSU with 152, and his .555 winning percentage is the third-best mark in school history.
  • This is the 50th anniversary season of Beeghly Center, which opened in 1972-73. The first women's game played in the arena was on Jan. 31, 1976. YSU is 47-15 at home since the start of the 2018-19 season for a .758 winning percentage, and it is 22-5 in its last 27 games on Rosselli Court.

Youngstown State vs. St. Francis Brooklyn

A Win Would...

  • Improve YSU's record to 2-3 this season.
  • Snap a three-game losing streak.
  • Be Head Coach John Barnes' 309th career victory and his 153rd at YSU.

Scouting the Terriers

  • St. Francis Brooklyn is 1-5 overall and 0-3 on the road following a 72-61 loss at Boston U on Wednesday afternoon. That game started a five-game road stretch for the Terriers, who have 11 games on their schedule between Nov. 7 and Dec. 10 but just one from Dec. through Jan. 2.
  • The Terriers, who have lost five straight decisions since a season-opening 81-15 victory over The College at Old Westbury, are averaging 61.8 points per game offensively and are forcing 17.7 turnovers per contest.
  • Alyssa Fisher leads St. Francis Brooklyn with 17.2 points per game, and she has made 16 of the Terriers' 37 3-pointers. Ella Ogier is averaging 10.3 points and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per contest.
  • St. Francis was picked third in the NEC Preseason Poll after finishing second in the standings and leading the league in scoring in 2021-22.

Series History

  • This is the first meeting between St. Francis Brooklyn and Youngstown State in women's basketball.
  • YSU vs. NEC Teams: Youngstown State is 13-4 all time against teams in the Northeast Conference. The Penguins are 6-0 in their history against Central Connecticut State, 4-3 against Saint Francis (Pa.), 1-1 versus LIU and 1-0 against Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner.
  • YSU vs. Linda Cimino: While Youngstown State has never played St. Francis Brooklyn, it has taken on a team led by Terriers head coach Linda Cimino. Cimino was the head coach at Binghamton when the Bearcats beat the Penguins at Beeghly Center in the opening round of the 2018 WBI.
  • Mack Knows the Terriers: YSU fifth-year senior Lindsey Mack played in the Northeast Conference for three seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson before transferring to Youngstown State. In 2020-21, Mack made four 3-pointers in both of her contests against the Terriers and averaged 14.5 points. In 2019-20, Mack made five 3s and scored 15 points

Nov. 26 in YSU History

  • Youngstown State is 5-7 overall in games played on Nov. 26, and the Penguins will be looking to win on the date against a team from New York for the second straight year. On Nov. 26, 2021, YSU beat LIU 70-55 behind 20 points and 10 rebounds from Lilly Ritz and a 38-14 scoring edge over the second and third quarters.
  • Five of the 12 games have been played at neutral sites as part of tournaments over the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Brandi Brown made 10 consecutive free throws as she went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line as the Penguins lost 90-73 to Northern Iowa at Loyola Marymount's Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 26, 2011. Brown scored her 1,000th career point the day before.

Recapping Western Michigan

  • Youngstown State struggled shooting the ball for the second straight game and fell 62-54 at Western Michigan on Tuesday.
  • After going 1-for-20 from 3-point range at Akron on Nov. 18, the Penguins were 4-for-25 from beyond the arc and shot just 29.1% overall against the Broncos.
  • Even with the poor shooting results, YSU trailed by two twice in the fourth period. The second time came when Lilly Ritz split a pair of free throws with 5:13 remaining to make the score 46-44.
  • Western Michigan went on a nine-point burst over the next 1:20 to regain control, and YSU got no closer the rest of the game. The run started with a 3-pointer by Maddie Watters, and Hannah Spitzley converted a YSU turnover into a bucket to make it 51-44. Spitzley missed her ensuing free throw, and Watters hit another 3-pointer off an offensive rebound to push the margin to 54-44. Watters added a free throw 20 seconds later to up the advantage to 11.
  • Ritz finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds, but WMU held her to 5-for-14 from the field. It was Ritz's third double-double in the first four games of the season and the second time that she grabbed at least 16 rebounds in a contest. Ritz has scored in double figures in all four games in 2022-23.
  • Dena Jarrells scored a season-high 12 points and added a season-best four assists. She scored 10 of those points over 13 minutes in the second half. She made the Penguins' only 3-pointer of the second half as they went 1-for-11 combined from beyond the arc.
  • Malia Magestro finished with nine points, eight of which came in the first half. No other Penguin had more than five points.
  • Haley Theirry matched her career with 12 minutes, and she performed by making her only field goal attempt and her two free-throw tries. She finished with four points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
  • Paige Shy grabbed eight rebounds, but she was held to four points in 30 minutes. She had her streak snapped of 10 straight games with a made 3-pointer dating back to last season.
  • Youngstown State outscored Western Michigan 15-13 in the opening quarter behind an 8-0 run to close it. The fourth quarter score was 21-21, but YSU was outscored 28-18 over the middle two quarters.
  • Taylor Williams led Western Michigan with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and she had 11 of those points on 5-for-5 shooting in the second quarter to help the Broncos take a 27-24 lead at halftime. Watters scored all 11 of her points in the fourth period.

Up Next

  • Youngstown State will head back on the road next week for the first two Horizon League games of the season. The Penguins will play at Northern Kentucky on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., and they'll play at Wright State on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.
