Tipoff Notes
Youngstown State seeks its first 3-0 start since the 2020-21 season when it visits ACC member Notre Dame, Sunday, Nov. 13. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Purcell Pavilion and will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN, iHeartRadio, Bally Sports Great Lakes and ESPN+.

The Notre Dame Series
This is the fourth meeting between Youngstown State and Notre Dame in a series that dates back to 1996. The Fighting Irish have won all three previous meetings, including an 87-78 decision on Dec. 21, 2015.

Last Time Out
Youngstown State is coming off 90-72 win over Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 9 in the 2022-23 home opener. Five players scored in double figures led by Dwayne Cohill's 19.

  • Improve YSU's record to 3-0 and mark the first time the Penguins started 3-0 since the 2020-21 campaign.

Scouting Notre Dame
Notre Dame is coming off a 79-76 season-opening win over Radford on Nov. 10. Nate Laszewski led the Fighting Irish with 28 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Trey Wertz poured in 18 points while Cormac Ryan added 10 points. The Fighting Irish connected on 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field and made eight 3-pointers.

Last Time vs. Notre Dame
Five players scored in double figures, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 87-78 decision to Atlantic Coast Conference member Notre Dame on Dec. 21, 2015, at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center. Leading the Penguins was sophomore Cameron Morse with 22 points and four assists in his first start of the season. Morse connected on 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Sidney Umude recorded the second double-double of his career with 15 points and 11 rebounds, junior Matt Donlan scored 14 points and freshmen Jordan Andrews and Latin Davis added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Back-to-Back 90s
Youngstown State put up at least 90 points for the second straight game in a 90-72 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 9. Five players scored in double figures led by Dwayne Cohill's 19 points. Malek Green, Garrett Covington and Brandon Rush each had 12 points and Adrian Nelson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds while freshman John Lovelace, Jr. added 10 points.

Masters Class
Youngstown State has four players on the 2022-23 roster that have already earned their bachelor's degrees. Garrett Covington, Malek Green, Adrian Nelson, and Chris Shelton have graduated and are all working toward a master's degree. Green earned a master's degree from Canisius and is working on a second master's degree.

Calhoun Approaching 200 
Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun has won 198 games in his career and needs three more to reach 200. He has won 74 at Youngstown State, including 53 over the last three-plus seasons.
Youngstown State returns home to face Grace Christian, Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Beeghly Center.

Experience Factor
The players on the 2022-23 Youngstown State roster have played in a combined 814 career games. Garrett Covington has played in 124 games at Youngstown State while Adrian Nelson has played in 116, Malek Green has played in 105, and Dwayne Cohill has played in 99.


1,000-Point Trio
The Penguins have a trio of players nearing the career 1 ,000-point scoring plateau. Malek Green has scored 963 points in his career and needs just 37 more to reach to plateau. Brandon Rush has scored 849 points and needs just 151 to reach 1,000, while Dwayne Cohill has scored 733 career points and needs just 267 to reach the mark. Cohill has also scored 542 at YSU and is 458 points shy of became the 42nd player in YSU history to score 1,000 points.
