Keller Leads Penguins at Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate

Senior Ken Keller finished tied for 40th to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team at the season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate hosted by Missouri at Turning Stone Resort's Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y.
As a team, the Penguins finished 13th with a three-round total of 925. YSU posted rounds of 302 and 314 in the first two rounds on Sunday before recording a 309 in the final round on Monday.
Keller, who was tied for 26th after the first two rounds of play, finished the event with a three-round score of 227 (75-73-79). The senior's first-round 75 featured 10 pars and three birdies. After a bogey on No. 4 to begin his round, Keller made par or better on 11 consecutive holes from No. 5 to No. 15. The Youngstown, Ohio, native fired an even-par 36 on the back nine during the opening round.
Keller's one-over-par 73 in the second round included 15 pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 5. He shot an even-par 36 on the front nine and a one-over-par 37 on the back nine. Keller made par or better on 14 of his final 15 holes. The senior's final-round 79 featured 10 pars and a pair of birdies on No. 1 and No. 5.
Kevin Scherr finished one stroke back of Keller in a tie for 43rd after finishing with a three-round 228 (70-84-74). The senior's two-under-par 70 in the first round featured 10 pars and five birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his final 14 holes. The Nazareth, Pa., native carded a two-under-par 34 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back nine while recording YSU's lowest individual round of the event. Scherr's final-round 74 included 11 pars and three birdies. After beginning his round with a bogey on No. 17, he made par or better on 12 consecutive holes from No. 18 to No. 11.
Bryan Kordupel finished tied for 50th with a three-round score of 230 (77-75-78). The senior's first-round 77 featured seven pars and five birdies as he fired a one-under-par 35 on the back nine. The Boardman, Ohio, native tallied four consecutive birdies from No. 10 to No. 13. Kordupel's second-round 75 included nine pars, three birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 13. The senior's final-round 78 featured 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 18.
Cole Christman concluded the event with a three-round 240 (80-82-78). The junior's first-round 80 included nine pars and two birdies as he made par or better on each of his first eight holes. The Boardman, Ohio, native carded a two-over-par 38 on the front nine during the first round. Christman's second-round 82 featured nine pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 15. The junior's final-round 78 included eight pars and three birdies as he shot a two-under-par 34 on the front nine. After starting his final session with a bogey on No. 17, Christman made par or better on nine straight holes from No. 18 to No. 8.
In his first event since March 10, 2020, Zack Ford turned in a three-round total of 247 (81-85-81). The senior's first-round 81 featured nine pars and a pair of birdies. Ford's final-round 81 included eight pars and two birdies as he recorded an even-par 36 on the front nine.
In his collegiate debut, Jacob Sylak finished with a three-round 253 (85-81-87). The true freshman's first-round 85 featured birdies at No. 3, No. 8 and No. 10. Sylak's second-round 81 included eight pars and three birdies as he shot a one-over-par 37 on the back nine. The Mineral Ridge, Ohio, native recorded seven pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 17 during the final round.
Missouri took home the tournament title at 17 under par with a three-round team total of 847. The Tigers finished two strokes ahead of runner-up LSU. Missouri's Jack Parker (70-67-70) and LSU's Michael Sanders (71-64-72) each finished at nine under par with a three-round 207 to share medalist honors.
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Sept. 13-14 with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
