
Keller Places in Top 20 To Lead YSU At HL Championships

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's golf team finished tied for eighth at the Horizon League Golf Championships which concluded on Tuesday at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Kampen Golf Course.
The Penguins carded a three-round score of 929 after firing a final-round 313. Oakland took first place with an 870 while Wright State was second with an 877 and Cleveland State was third with a 906. YSU tied Green Bay in the team standings and was just two strokes shy of a sixth-place finish.
Senior Ken Keller recorded his second career top-20 finish at the league championships posting an 18th-place performance. Keller ended the tournament with a round of 75 on Tuesday and carded a 227 for the three-day event. Keller's final round featured four birdies and seven pars. Keller opened the round with birides at No. 1 and No. 4 to get to two-under par and shot an ever-par 35 on the front nine. He started the final round in 21st place and made a push to get into the top 20.
C.J. Hughes was YSU's biggest mover on the day finishing the tournament in 26th place. Hughes improved five spots after carding a 77 to finish with a three-round total of 233. Hughes had 10 pars, including the first three holes, and birdied the par-3 fifth and the par-5 10th during his round.
Kevin Scherr posted a 31st-place finish with a three-round total of 235. On Tuesday, Scherr jumped out to a good start and was one-under par through the first four holes. He ended the front side two-over par. On the back nine he played No. 10 through 15 one-under par to highlight his round.
Bryan Kordupel posted three birdies (No. 4, No. 6, No. 7) on the front nine to shoot a two-under par 34. Through 11 holes he was even par following a birdie on No. 11. He finished with a three-round total of 239 and was 38th for the tournament.
Cole Christman's final round featured 10 pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th hole. He finished with a final-round score of 83 and for the tournament shot a 240.
Earning medalist honors for the Championship was Oakland's Thomas Giroux who finished with a three-round total of 214. Giroux hung on for a two-shot victory over Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly. The Golden Grizzlies placed three in top eight while Wright State had three golfers finish in the top five.
