
Scherr Leads Penguins to Fifth-Place Finish at Wright State Invitational

Kevin Scherr tied for third place to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the Wright State Invitational on Monday at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Ohio.
Scherr finished with a season-best three-round score of 212 (67-74-71) to tie for third place. The senior's first-round 67 (-4), which marked his lowest round of the season, featured 10 pars and six birdies. Scherr, who was in first place after the first round of play, made par or better on each of his first nine holes. His even-par 71 in Monday's final round included 12 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 11 of his final 12 holes. Scherr finished two strokes back of the winning score.
As a team, the Penguins finished fifth with a three-round total of 894. YSU posted rounds of 288 and 307 in the first two rounds on Sunday to sit tied for second place heading into the final session. The Guins recorded a final-round score of 299 on Monday.
Cole Christman finished tied for 14th with a three-round 223 (73-74-76). The sophomore's first-round 73 featured 11 pars and three birdies. He made par or better on each of his first eight holes during the first round. Christman's second-round 74 included 12 pars and a pair of birdies as he made par or better on eight of his first nine holes. The Boardman, Ohio, native was tied for ninth place after two rounds of action.
Ken Keller tied for 35th with a three-round total of 228 (72-81-75). The senior's one-over-par 72 in the first round featured 15 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 16. Keller made par or better on 14 of his final 15 holes in the first round. He carded 12 pars and a pair of birdies during his final-round 75. Keller made par or better on 11 of his first 12 holes during the final session.
Bryan Kordupel (76-81-77) and C.J. Hughes (78-78-78) each finished the event with a three-round 234 to tie for 59th. Kordupel's first-round 76 saw him make 10 pars and two birdies. He finished the round strong by making par or better on eight of his final nine holes. The junior made par or better on 11 of his first 12 holes during his final-round 77. Hughes made nine pars and a pair of birdies during his first-round 78. He also recorded six pars and three birdies during his final-round 78.
Wright State took home the tournament title by 13 strokes with a three-round team total of 873 (287-292-294). Valparaiso and Ohio tied for second place while Purdue Fort Wayne finished two strokes ahead of the Penguins in fourth place. YSU finished ahead of Horizon League foes Green Bay, Northern Kentucky IUPUI, Robert Morris, Cleveland State and Detroit Mercy.
Wright State's Austin Schoonmaker (70-67-73) and Valparaiso's Caleb VanArragon (69-73-68) each finished with a three-round score of 210 to share medalist honors.
Youngstown State will now prepare for the Horizon League Championships, which will take place April 25-27 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
