Keller, Kordupel Lead Penguins to Fifth-Place Finish at Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate

Ken Keller and Bryan Kordupel each earned a top-15 finish to lead the Youngstown State men's golf to a fifth-place finish on Tuesday in the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
Keller carded a career-best three-round score of 209 (74-68-67) to finish tied for sixth at one under par. The senior's three-round 209 is tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Keller's final-round 67 (-3), which matched the lowest round of his career, featured 12 pars, three birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 2. He made par or better on 13 of his first 14 holes during the final round of play as he climbed seven spots on the leaderboard. Keller's second-round 68 included nine pars, four birdies and an eagle on the par-four No. 1.
Kordupel recorded a career-best three-round total of 212 (74-72-66) to finish tied for 12th at two over par. The junior fired a career-low round of 66 (-4) in Tuesday's final round to climb from 37th to 12th. Kordupel's final-round 66 featured 10 pars and six birdies as he made par or better on 13 consecutive holes at one point. The junior's final-round 66 is tied for the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in school history. Kordupel is one of only two Penguins since 2015 to record a round of 66 or below.
The Penguins fired a season-low round of 277 (-3) in Tuesday's final session to shoot up four spots on the team leaderboard. YSU's final-round 277 ranks as the third-lowest 18-hole team score in program history. It is the Penguins' lowest round since carding a 275 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in 2015-16.
YSU posted rounds of 296 and 283 in the first two rounds on Monday to finish with a three-round team total of 856. The performance ranks as the fourth-lowest 54-hole team score in school history. It is the Penguins' lowest 54-hole performance since recording an 854 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in 2015-16.
Cole Christman tied for 34th with a career-best three-round score of 218 (77-69-72). The sophomore's second-round 69 (-1), which matched his career-low round, featured 11 pars and four birdies. Christman made par or better on each of his final eight holes as he played the back nine at two under par.
Kevin Scherr tied for 50th with a season-best three-round total of 223 (71-76-76). The senior's first-round 71, which marked his lowest round of the season, included 11 pars and three birdies. Scherr made par or better on each of his first 14 holes as he played the front nine at three under par.
C.J. Hughes tied for 53rd with a season-best three-round 225 (79-74-72). The senior's final-round 72, which matched his lowest round of the season, featured 10 pars and three birdies.
Dayton posted a three-round team total of 835 (290-269-276) to finish at five under par and win the tournament title by four strokes over Bowling Green. The Falcons held a two-shot lead over the Flyers heading into the final round of action. Wright State and Ohio finished third and fourth, respectively. YSU finished in front of Horizon League foes Cleveland State, IUPUI, Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky.
Dayton's Kyle Schmidt (69-65-70) and Cleveland State's Zak Supelak (72-63-69) each finished with a three-round 204 to tie for first place. Schmidt was designated as the winner after winning the first playoff hole.
Youngstown State will have its final tune-up before the Horizon League Championships on April 18-19 when it competes in the Wright State Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Ohio.
