
Penguins Close Out Play at Jackrabbit Invitational

The Youngstown State men's golf team finished seventh in its spring season opener on Saturday at the Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
The Penguins, who were competing for the first time since March 10, 2020, posted a three-round team total of 911 to finish seventh out of nine teams. On Friday, YSU carded a 313 in the first round before bouncing back nicely with a 289 in round two. The Guins closed out play with a 309 in the final session on Saturday.
Bryan Kordupel (77-76-72) and Kevin Scherr (75-72-78) each fired a three-round score of 225 to finish tied for 31st. Kordupel's even-par 72 in the final round featured 11 pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 14. The junior went two under par on the back nine with six pars, a birdie and an eagle. Scherr's second-round 72 included 12 pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 11.
Ken Keller finished with a three-round 233 (82-74-77) to tie for 40th. The senior's second-round 74 featured 11 pars and three birdies. Keller went one under par with six pars and three birdies over his final 11 holes in the second session.
Cole Christman tied for 44th with a three-round total of 235 (82-71-82). The sophomore's one-under-par 71 in the second round included 13 pars and eagles on the par-five No. 7 and the par-five No. 11. Christman made par or better on 12 of his first 13 holes in the second round. His second-round 71 was YSU's lowest individual round of the event.
C.J. Hughes recorded a three-round 236 (79-72-85) to finish tied for 47th. The senior's second-round 72 featured nine pars and five birdies, and he made par or better on 12 of his final 14 holes.
Playing as an individual, Derek Miller tied for 49th with a three-round score of 237 (82-74-81). Miller's second-round 74 included 10 pars and two birdies as he made par or better on eight of his first nine holes.
UNLV recorded a three-round team total of 836 (-28) to win the tournament by 14 strokes over runner-up Southern Utah. The Runnin' Rebels fired rounds of 282, 279 and 275. Jake Vincent of Southern Utah finished at 15 under par as he claimed medalist honors by three strokes with a three-round 201 (67-67-67).
Youngstown State will continue its spring season March 26-28 with the Battle at Rum Pointe hosted by Iona at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links in Berlin, Md.
