Garretto Earns Victory Against Detroit Mercy

Southfield, Mich. - Joao Garretto picked up a singles win but the Youngstown State men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Detroit Mercy at the Franklin Athletic Club on Sunday evening.

Garretto picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory over UDM's Nathan Ponton at No. 2 singles. The Penguins (7-10 overall and 1-2 in Horizon League play) took two other singles matches to three sets, but could not pick up victories.

At No. 4, Bassem El Mekawi dropped a 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 decision to Jenya Sirous and at No. 5, Yossi Dahan lost 6-7, 6-2, 10-7 to Gvidas Motuzas.

The Titans (12-9 and 4-1) earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

The Penguins are next in action on Saturday when they play host to Northern Kentucky.
