Penguins Defeat IUPUI To End Regular Season

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 win over IUPUI on Sunday at the West Indy Racquet Club. The Penguins finish Horizon League play at 5-2 and are the No. 3 seed at the conference tournament.
With the win, YSU improved to 11-10 overall while IUPUI finishes the season 7-18 and 1-6.
The Penguins won at No. 2 and No. 3 to win the doubles point. At No. 2, Danylo Veremeichuk and Yossi Dahan won 6-4 while at No. 3, Matthew Kritzinger and Bassem El Mekawi won 6-2.
YSU and the Jaguars split the six singles matches in the contest. The Guins picked up wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.
Clinching the match for the Penguins was a marathon win by Vasilis Vardakis at No. 3. The Guins picked up straight set wins at No. 4 as El Mekawi won 6-2, 6-3 while Dahan earned a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5.
Three of the singles matches went to third-set tiebreakers. Joao Garretto lost his match 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 and Alonso Lauz dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 decision.
Vasilis rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9) win at No. 3 to clinch the victory for YSU.
YSU takes on Wright State in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championships on Friday. The match in West Lafayette, Ind., is set for 3 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals to face Cleveland State.
