Penguins Advance With 4-1 Win Over Oakland

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team opened play at the Horizon League Championships on Friday with a 4-1 win over Oakland at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Courts. The Penguins advance to play UIC on Saturday morning.
With the match moved indoors, YSU and Oakland split the first two completed doubles matches with the Penguins winning 6-2 at No. 2 and the Golden Grizzlies posting a 6-3 at No. 1. The Guins won the deciding match at No. 3 by a 6-4 score.
Oakland (11-10) picked up a win a No. 1 singles as Tamara Blum defeated Dominika Lackova 6-2, 6-4. But the Guins seized control in the other five singles matches.
At No. 4, Sofia Macias won 6-4, 6-1 against Daria Artamonova. At No. 5, Nehel Sahni picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sofia Borcuti and a No. 6, Ana Stroe had a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Juliana Guervara. At No. 2, Annina Brendel led 6-4, 5-1 against Elizabeth Guy and was had a match point on serve when the YSU win was clinched. At No. 3, Noelly Nsimba led Karine Celis 7-6, 2-1.
Winning at No. 2 doubles was Lackova and Macias while Stroe and Julianna Heino won a No. 3.
The Penguins (10-12) have won six straight Horizon League tournament matches and now play UIC in the semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m.
