S&D: Penguins To Honor Three Seniors Against Bowling Green
2/4/2015 12:00:00 AM | Swimming and Diving
The Youngstown State swimming and diving team closes out the dual meet portion of their schedule on Friday against Bowling Green at the Beeghly Natatorium. The meet is the final home event for seniors Ashley Dow, Chelsea Malone and Casey Cullen.
Prior to the meet the seniors will be honored for their YSU careers.
Dow has been one of the most successful swimmers in the Penguins' Horizon League and Division I tenure. She has won three Horizon League individual titles during her career and in 2012 became the first YSU swimmer since 2004 to claim a conference title. As a freshman she was named the co-Newcomer of the Year and as a sophomore she swept both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke competitions at the league meet. She owns the school records in both of those events.
Malone has competed in the sprint freestyle and backstroke while being a key part of the YSU relay teams. She is part of the school-record holding 200-yard freestyle relay squad that set the mark last February. Malone ranks in the top 10 in school history in both backstroke events as well.
Cullen has battled injuries during her YSU career but has been a key member of the program since her arrival in 2011. She competed primarily in the backstroke and butterfly for the Penguins.
To open the season, YSU (4-6) competed at the Tom Stubbs Relays against Bowling Green (8-1). The Falcons have had a strong season which has included a win over Michigan State and Akron. BGSU is coming off a narrow loss at Buffalo.
Besides the seniors, freshmen Madison Aranda and Viktoria Orosz, who have combined to set seven school records this year will look to pick up momentum prior to the league meet.
This is the Penguins' last competition before the Horizon League Championships are held in Milwaukee at the end of the month.
The YSU divers have one more meet left before conference. The Penguins will host their annual Invitational on Sunday morning.
