
Penguins Take Top Two Spots at IPFW Spring Classic

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Allison Mitzel took medalist honors while Aislynn Merling came in second for the YSU women's golf team at the IPFW Spring Classic which concluded on Monday at the Chestnut Hills Golf Club.
Mitzel charged home with a final-round 73 to take first place by two shots over Merling. Mitzel carded a 73 on Monday after her 74 on Sunday to finish with a total of 147. Merling was in the hunt throughout and was tied for first place following an opening round 72. She shot a 77 on Monday and ended up just two strokes behind her teammate.
Mitzel was strong on the par 5's finished at minus-three in the event. She tied for the tournament high with five birdies while Merling finished with four.
In the team race, YSU came up just short of the team title behind Indianapolis. UIndy won with a two-round score of 612 after rounds of 300 and 312. YSU and Oakland tied for the second-lowest second round at 309. The Guins had an opening score of 305 and had a 614 for the event. Ferris State was third and Oakland placed fourth at 621.
The Penguins ahead of four Horizon League schools who were participating - Oakland, Detroit, Green Bay and Valparaiso.
Other YSU finishers for the tournament were Emily Dixon who was 25th with a 158 (79-79), Emily Rohanna who came in 28th at 160 (80-80) and Mia Barchetti who was 43rd posting a 164 (82-82). The Guins' other competing team featured Angela Molaskey who was 25th with a 158 (80-78), Haleigh Guerrero who was 58th at 173 (87-86), Kayla Cerimele placed 62nd and Brittany Schneider was 65th.
YSU returns to action on April 14-15 when it competes at the Red Flash Invitational hosted by Saint Francis (Pa.) at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.
